Federal and Provincial safety regulations have been established to help reduce the costs associated with workplace injury and death. Most workers fall under the jurisdiction of the 13 territories and provinces. The Canadian Occupational Health and Safety Regulations (COHSR), have been established to align the federal regulations with those of the provinces to create continuity between all of the Canadian regulatory bodies. Part XII of the COHSR deals specifically with employees who work at heights, and is intended to help ensure that they are following best practices with respect to fall prevention and fall protection.
Nouvelle Hauteur can help you find the right equipment, develop your company’s fall protection plan(s), as well as train your employees to properly control for the hazards related to performing work at heights. You can find the majority of the courses that we offer here on our site. Please note, that if the course you need isn’t found below, we do offer custom courses that are tailored to your specific needs as well.
Some of the main requirements under provincial and federal regulations are:
If workers are exposed to a fall of 3 meters or more, or there is a risk present that would justify fall protective equipment below 3 meters (i.e. moving water, machinery, freeflowing solids, etc.), employers are required to provide the appropriate fall protection equipment to control for the hazard.
If the first condition is met requiring workers to use fall protective equipment or a fall protection system, then employers shall, in collaboration with the company’s health and safety committee, establish written work procedures that include detailed instructions for how to safely use, maintain, and care fore the safety equipment required.
In addition to providing fall protection equipment and a fall protection plan, employers are required to ensure that their employees receive adequate training to implement the fall protection plan, and to use the fall protection equipment in order to work at heights safely.
